Generally, we don’t play in teams, or in a competitive way. Instead, we enjoy the game by having each player pick a drawing card at the same time. Everyone draws while hiding his or her pictures. Once everyone has completed their image, we go around and the rest of the group has to guess what was drawn.

I absolutely love playing this way because it prevents the fighting of who goes first, the boredom of waiting for one person to do the drawing, and eliminates the panic of not knowing the right words for an image.

You can certtainly opt to play competitively! It all depends on the skills and demeanor of your players.
