On a whim, before our first camping trip with the kids, I created these cards. I wanted to be sure. to have some simple activities to do at the campsite during the lulls of cooking over a fire.
Immediately after I pulled them out to play at breakfast on our first morning, the joy in my 7 year old’s eyes was real. She was hooked.
From there, William and Hazel (then 4 and 3), were also in love with the game. The silly creativity of the movements, the autonomoy over “reading” a card on their own, the power of being the one that has all of our attention. They adored it all.
With 27 printable cards that each include an image and words, all ages of early reading can join in on the game.

While my main focus in creating this game was simply to keep the kids busy while we had down time at our campsite, there are a multitude of skills they were learning and practicing while we played.

Prep Your Printable Charades Game
Why does charades work so well when you are camping?
It doesn’t require any addition supplies!
Before you leave for your trip, simply print and cut your cards. I do recommend you laminate them so they stay in good shape while you travel.
Once you’ve done that, you are ready to play.
How To Play Camping Charades
With both a picture and words on each card, all ages of kids can join in on the fun. Your early readers will be able to make connections on what they see and act out the image, while your readers can confirm their thinking with the image.
If you have younger players joining in, or are working to build your camping vocabulary knowledge with your crew, I recommed playing by:
- Spread all the cards out, face up, on the table.
- Player 1 mentally choosing a card and acts it out.
- While looking at the actions and referencing the spread out cards, everyone else guessing what Player 1 is acting out.
You can also play athe more traditional way of having the pile face down and the guessing people not being able to see the options. If you want to make it more competitive, grab a timer and play on teams.
