Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt Pin 1

As much as I want to say my kids love a hike as much as Rob and I do, they don’t.

It usually takes much coaxing to get them to get out the door when they know there is a hike involved. I try to plan them so that we are headed to something interesting – a waterfall, a riverside, an old town, a viewpoint – but not all hikes are designed that way.

Once we finally get moving, the kids get into it and say they enjoyed it, but the convincing to take that first step is tough.

This Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt is one printable I like to have in my back pocket as a motivator for the kids. Whether our hike is just a walk through our backyard, or we are on a longer hiking adventure, all three kids adore hunting and gathering these little items.

As with all nature, make sure you are in a place where collecting a pebble or a dandelion is allowed. If you are in your backyard, or a small patch of woods, not a worry, but somet parks have stricter rules.

This Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt is a huge discussion builder as you move along with your child to collect items. You can have conversations about which leaves you might to leave alone (hey, poison ivy), how to find bark on the ground, what a pinecone does, and the size differences in pebbles versus rocks.

There are just so many great conversations to have together while you are outside in nature! This includes comparative discussions when they spread out all their finds at the end.

How To Use Your Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt

There is a tiny bit of prep work involved here. Once you print your Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt page (there are two to a page), cut them in half and glue them to a brown paper bag.

That’s it!

Grab your bags and a writing utensil for each child as you head out for your nature walk.

As you walk, your child can collect the items on the list and put them in her bag. She can check off her list as she goes.

Ineveitably, you are going to end up holding the bag for your child, but by then, she will be having so much fun, the walking and discovery will keep going!
