When the kids were 7, 5, and 3, we took them camping for the first time.
They absolutely loved it!
The sleeping outside in the fresh air, the little hiking and swimming adventures, the s’mores, the campfire, seeing fireflies. The kids were all in on it.
Of course, they had their fair share of complaints – bug bites, darkness, fear at night going to bed.
Overall, though, they had a blast. To the point that our oldest requested to have her 8th birthday party while camping (which we did).

To add to the camping fun, I prepped a few items for them to do while we were at the campsite. Think downtime activities that can easily be done at a picnic table while dinner is cooking on the fire.
I brought along items like:
- Rainstick making supplies (paper towel tubes, rice, tinfoil, washi tape)
- Cars and trucks to use in the gravel
- Memory games
- Charades
- Uno

There is a word search with 16 words that is ideal for second graders and up. This word search helps reinforce spelling and introduces some new vocabulary specific to camping.
The next word search includes 8 shorter words and is ideal for kindergarten and first graders. Many of the words are phoentic, which gives ideal letter sound and word formation practice!
